Hmm, when I upgraded recently, I ditched my X-Fi and fell back to using the perfectly capable HD sound chip on my mobo. Everything was fine except for GW, which remained mute. I had to uninstall everything ever installed by Creative's bloody awful bloatware they call sound drivers. that fixed it.

I'd be tempted to DEL C:\ct* -all, but that would probably be unwise

Me thinks audio codec conflict...

Solution:

Uninstall ALL audio drivers, and make sure you are not using the generic nVidia sound driver from Forceware.

After this is done, restart the PC. Find your computer manufacturers site, and go to their driver download area. Find the most recent audio driver, and download and install that. Restart the PC once more.

Run Guild Wars, and hopefully, the conflict should be gone. If not, there is another step to try.

Aaargh reporting no sound with realtek audio too!!!

Started almost 15 days ago maybe less, only happens with guild wars, all other apps and games play sound.

Already had newest audio drivers, but uninstalled and reinstalled, still no sound.

Soundblaster cards are so crappy these days.... ASUS Sonar cards destroy Creative's crap, especially with the new model doing direct HD decoding.

Try using -dsound to re-enable the old directsound software mixer. It's not a perfect solution, as it tends to be much slower than FMOD, but it might work for you.

Having the same issue here.

PC is fine and no problems with sound.

GW is on permanent mute though - despite checking the sound settings through F11

Very annoying.

ok guys sorry for bringing up 4-5 month old posts but i've found one possible fix (it worked for me), and some more suggestions.

for all those people who have no sound in guild wars only, but can get their sound to work with the -dsound switch: look into your guild wars installation folder (should be C:\program files\guild wars) and see if there is a file named dsound.dll . if there is, delete it. remove the -dsound switch from your guild wars shortcut and run the game as normal.

for people where this was not the problem, here are a few suggestions:
-run dxdiag and see if there are any problems on the audio tab. if there is, google for a solution.
-upgrade to the latest directx (9.0c for XP, 11 for vista and windows 7)
-upgrade to the latest drivers for your audio card. if you have on-board audio, look at your motherboard's manufacturer website for drivers.
-uninstall audio codec packages if you have any. There might be a conflict somewhere.
-do a system restore back to the point where sound in guild wars worked.

as a last resort
-do a clean install of your operating system and immediatley get the most up-to-date drivers for all your hardware, then try again
